One of the biggest changes in a woman’s life is when she enters perimenopause and menopause. Both can be life-altering events, am I right?
It changed my life 12 years ago, and when it happened to me, I felt ashamed. I purposefully say “happened to me” because you don’t see it coming until all of a sudden you have your first hot flash episode and not because you just finished a spin class. It came as a shock. I was not prepared for what was about to happen next. I had no point of reference because my mom never went through menopause due to a hysterectomy.
I didn’t see visible physical changes right away, but I definitely noticed a change in my mental and emotional health. I used to have an excellent memory, but now, not so much. Let’s just say I use a lot of sticky notes to compensate.
My emotions have been on a roller coaster for the last 12 years and the unexpected outbursts of sadness or anger were no surprise. I can deal with all that, but eventually, the physical changes caught up with me as well. Insomnia became my new norm. In addition, I started to develop osteoporosis 10 years ago.
At first, I was kind of excited not to get my life-interfering period anymore, but after I learned how the lack of estrogen and progesterone can affect my overall health long term, I started my research more intensely. I am talking about serious health issues such as diabetes 2, cardiovascular disease, stroke, dementia, and osteoporosis (just to name a few).
The very few studies that I was able to find on the subject of premature ovarian failure (that’s what my “condition” is called), actually mention increased overall mortality, due to loss of normal ovarian function before the age of 40 years.
I went through 4 gynecologists, only to be turned away with the “advice” to learn to live with it and that it eventually will get better. I was only 38 years old, and my whole life just took a huge turn. I felt totally let down by my doctors. At some point, I even thought maybe there is something wrong with me mentally and emotionally and I needed psychotherapy. Needless to say, I tried and there was nothing wrong with me, well not in a way that it would fix my hormones anyway….lol!
There is still not enough talk about the changes a woman goes through as her fertile years come to an end. I feel there is still a stigma around a woman going through hormonal changes. We finally normalized periods, pregnancy, post-partum depression and other realities of being a woman, but menopause is still mostly viewed as negative and leads women to stay silent and secretive about it. Even me sharing my story with you feels almost inappropriate.
We need to address the fact that menopause is not just related to the STOP of a woman’s period. It also impacts a woman from her physical, emotional, and mental health. And not every woman experiences the changes the same way!
While hormone replacement therapy and over-the-counter solutions exist (which can come with side effects), there is a severe lack of menopause specialists and holistic care models. I made it my mission to keep educating women about the signs, effects, possible new innovations, and nutrition relating to perimenopause and menopause. Unfortunately, there is no on/off switch or a multiple choice test to predict if and when you will officially be in menopause, and it doesn’t happen all of a sudden. It’s more like an extended rollout of different symptoms.
What we do know is that supplementing with nutrition has to be a crucial part of minimizing your symptoms, no matter what phase of menopause you are in.
I personally recommend a functional approach. This means consulting either with a functional nutritionist or a functional doctor specializing in endocrine health about your hormonal changes. In my professional experience as a functional nutritionist the GUT and your THYROID HEALTH are a big part of hormone health.
That’s why I started a hormone-free menopause supplement 5 weeks ago and it is already showing promising results. I haven’t slept this well for YEARS, which has lead to so much more energy!
This cutting-edge, groundbreaking category of intuitive nutrition is designed to empower women to take ownership of their hormone health.
I just needed to share this with you because I know how many women suffer silently with their symptoms. I think it’s because some of these symptoms are very personal (such as like vaginal dryness and loss of one’s sex drive). Believe me…I hear you and understand you.
So, as a functional nutritionist, I am quite impressed how this product is working for me, and I will keep you updated as I get further into my journey.
